The topic looks at militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism as causes for starting World War One through questions stemming from 10 primary or secondary source documents. The sources include one map, a chart, three cartoons and a newspaper headline. Each document is followed by at least one constructed response question and a summary essay question using the documents wraps up the DBQ. Your students will be engaged with this common core-aligned activity. Students will work in pairs to analyze 8 propaganda posters from World War I. The posters are from several different countries (The U.S. , France, Britain, Germany, Russia and Austria-Hungary). A power point introduction to propaganda and "Total War" is included. Students read the titles of songs and predict what the topic/message, point of view, and emotions of the song are, as well as when during the war the song came out. They then look up the lyrics to the songs or listen to the lyrics (10 websites provided) to see how accurate their predictions were, and lastly they answer 4 questions. This is appropriate for US or World History.

I like using modern videos in class that reinforce what I am teaching. I like this series and have developed some study guides that go with each of the 45 minute videos. The videos were free on youtube as I now show them off of Amazon Prime. If you do not like Amazon prime then you can buy them off of Apple or look for them cheap on ebay.

Teaching History with Film: Strategies for Secondary Social Studies
Great activity for World War II that forces students to think critically! Students are given five scenarios that involve World War II, the Holocaust, and its aftermath. Then they are asked to answer a series of thought provoking moral questions. Each story is based on a true event and the real stories are also provided.
